Graves and Survivors From An Old War
I was reading about the discovery of Korean mass graves from 1950 - filled by the South Korean regime with prisoners they killed during that summer. They were afraid they were North Korean sympathizers and they didn't want them to end up helping the North. They realized that not all of them fit that profile but they didn't take time to sift out the ones that were just ordinary peasants.
My brother was just here and as we were talking about some of the atrocities we now read about that happened then - he told me something that I heard for the first time.
There was a young man who worked at a gas station in Herrin -where we lived -who was in the army when the Korean war broke out. He and many other U.S. soldiers were captured by the North Koreans who had them gathered in a group as they circled them with machine guns. Two U.S. sergeants decided to try to escape. They say that the best time to do that is early on so they decided to go for it and bring this kid from Herrin along with them. The moment came when they made their break and as they were running they heard the machine guns go off - killing all the rest of the U.S. soldiers there!
That was one close call! The pictures of these three and their stories were in the paper back in the 50's.
Now there is a whole new set of stories. The kind we would rather not have but the kind there will always be as long as there is sin. Thankfully, we have the option of something better in the next life.
